AAWL 2012 Summer Camp Registration Now Open!




Summer Camp is offered each summer over a 10-week period at AAWL & SPCA Education Campus. Week-long sessions are offered for children ages 6-14 and cover a range of topics from animal care, veterinary medicine, responsible pet ownership and wildlife education.

There are three types of camps to choose from; Camp Ruffin' It (ages 6-12), Camp Vet (ages 12-14) and Junior Keepers (ages 12-14).

Camp Ruffin' It
For the 2012 summer season AAWL is offering two different themes for kids ages 6-8, as well as two different themes for kids ages 9-12!

Camp Ruffin' It for kids ages 6-8

Animals Around the World - Travel from Arizona to Australia, South America, Antarctica and Asia all in one week, without ever leaving AAWL & SPCA! Connect with animals and cultures around the world while exploring with dogs, cats, chinchillas and more!

Be the Creature - Bark like a dog. Slither like a snake. Hop like a rabbit. Dance like a bee. Get a “wild groove” on as you discover how animals use sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, movement and body language. Explore the many amazing and unique ways animals communicate.

Camp Ruffin' It for kids ages 9-12

Doctor Dog - Our “Doctor Dog” theme allows your child to step into the exciting world of veterinary medicine! It is designed to introduce younger campers to a wide variety of animals and the care that they require while learning what it takes to become a veterinarian. Campers will experience real-life medicine and hands-on animal interactions.

Blend Bolt or Bite - Animals are incredible when faced with danger! Animals have adapted many ways to keep themselves safe. They can blend in, bolt out of site or turn and bite! Discover the tricky ways animals stay safe.

Full Day Camp
8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Program fee: Non-Members $275, Members $245
After Care is available from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The cost is $50 for the entire week when paid in advance or $15.00 per day.
Half Day Camp
8:00 am - Noon
Program fee: Non-Members $175, Members $155

Camp Vet
Camp Vet is a hands-on camp for 12–14 year olds. This career discovery program will introduce campers to a wide variety of animals and the care that they require, while learning what it takes to become a veterinarian. Campers will experience real-life medicine including:
  • Observing surgeries in our veterinary clinic
  • Dissecting organs
  • Learning anatomy
  • Viewing specimens under microscopes
  • Practicing hands-on pet first aid
  • Exploring how animal diseases can be very different than those that affect humans

Camp Vet Advanced
Advanced Camp Vet sessions are open exclusively for 12-15 year old participants who have formerly attended at least one session of Camp Vet. This accelerated Camp Vet experience dives deeper into the world of veterinary science and offers additional hands-on opportunities. Campers in the advanced sessions will work side by side in one-day rotations with veterinarians and veterinary technicians in our Pet MD clinic.

AAWL has added a new summer camp for 2012!

Junior Keepers Camp

Junior Keepers is for ages 12-14. Junior Keepers offers a unique opportunity to follow in the footsteps of animal professionals. Participants will engage in actual keeper chores that they perform everyday to keep the animal residents healthy. They will work in the Reptile room, small mammal area as well as many other behind-the-scenes areas at AAWL & SPCA.

Participants will now develop skills to manage keeper records, keeper staff, food orders, and learn the science behind animal husbandry. If your child is interested in animals and does not mind getting down and dirty this is the perfect camp to keep them engaged this summer! Limit 10 students per class.
